The City Escape — and what to expect
We thought we had seen Kristiansand when we stepped off the ship. The harbour, the city centre, the cafés, the sea air — it all felt welcoming and easy. But The City Escape showed us something different: the quieter side of Sørlandet.
Not long after meeting our guide at the cruise terminal, we were on the road out of the city, following the Otra valley north towards Vennesla. The landscape changed quickly. Streets became forest, the city rhythm softened, and it felt as if we were being let in on a part of Southern Norway most visitors never reach.
The first stop was Tømmerrenna, the old timber flume. We did not quite know what to expect, but it became the surprise of the day. Wooden walkways led us through the forest, into tunnels and across suspension bridges, with the river close by and stories of timber floating, hard work and local industry bringing the place to life. It felt adventurous without being too demanding — just the right mix of fresh air, history and something completely unexpected.

On the way back to Kristiansand, we stopped at Ravnedalen. After the movement and energy of Tømmerrenna, this felt calm and almost secret. The cliffs, water, old trees and soft paths made it hard to believe we were so close to the city. Our guide told us how General Wergeland and his soldiers helped shape the park in the 1870s, turning the valley into one of Kristiansand’s most atmospheric green spaces.
What we appreciated most was the pace. Nothing felt rushed. There was time to take photos, ask questions, listen, walk and simply enjoy the surroundings. The tour felt personal, but not overplanned — thoughtful, relaxed and full of small local details.
By the time we returned to the port, we felt we had seen a side of Sørlandet we would never have found on our own. Not just the city, but the landscape around it. Not just the sights, but the stories that connect them.
The City Escape was exactly that: a gentle escape from the cruise crowd, and a half-day that made Kristiansand feel wider, quieter and more memorable.
