THE COASTAL DEFENCE A 4-hour tour through Kristiansand’s coastal history
Three places tell one connected story of Sørlandet’s coast: from the fortress town of the 1600s, through the age of sail, harbour control and quarantine, to the German coastal defences of the Second World War at Møvik.
These are not three random stops. Together, Christiansholm Fortress, Odderøya and Møvik form a line through almost four centuries of coastal defence, sea power and protection along Norway’s southern coast.
Your guide meets you at the cruise terminal, where comfortable transport is waiting. We begin at Christiansholm Fortress, completed in 1672 as part of the defence plan for Kristiansand after the city was founded in 1641. From there, we continue to Odderøya — once Kristiansand’s oldest fortress area and later Northern Europe’s largest quarantine station. The tour ends at Møvik, home to Batterie Vara and one of the world’s largest land-based cannons, built by German forces during the Second World War.
Three stops. One coastline. Almost four centuries of power, trade, disease control, occupation and defence — told as one continuous story.

Meet your Guide:
Your tour is led by one of our trusted local guides — chosen for their knowledge of Kristiansand, storytelling ability and warm sense of hospitality.
Our guides bring the coast’s history to life through stories of kings, fortresses, trade routes, quarantine stations, occupation and everyday life by the sea. The experience is calm, personal and carefully paced, with time to ask questions, take photos and connect the places into one larger story.
Rather than offering a standard sightseeing tour, we focus on creating a thoughtful and memorable introduction to Kristiansand’s coastal history — with local insight, scenic stops and a genuine Sørland welcome.
“We would rather host a small group well than a large group briefly. Everything we plan is paced for that.”
What guests say
"Thoughtfully paced, personal and full of stories we would never have connected on our own.”
